We were saddened to hear that on May 5^th, Proctor and Gamble purchased Natura Pet Products – manufacturers of California Natural, Innova, EVO, Healthwise and Karma. This purchase is expected to be complete within 30 days. We will not gamble with your pet’s health and we will be monitoring the situation very closely on your behalf. While we will not be immediately discontinuing the product line, many of our customers may not want to support a company like Proctor and Gamble so we have created a list of potential substitutions for you to consider.

Dear Friends,

Today Nature’s Variety is announcing that out of an abundance of caution, we are voluntarily recalling all Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula products with a “Best If Used By” date on or before 2/5/11.

Nature’s Variety has received new test results from an outside facility that indicate that Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with the "Best If Used By" date of 10/29/10 and Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with the "Best If Used By" date of 11/9/10 may be contaminated with Salmonella. Therefore, we are voluntarily recalling these date codes of product from the marketplace. Also, out of an abundance of caution, we are expanding our voluntary recall to include all Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for dogs and cats with any "Best If Used By" date on or before 2/5/11. We believe taking this action is an important and responsible step in order to reinforce your confidence and trust.

No other Raw Frozen Diets are involved in this expansion other than chicken, and no other Nature’s Variety products are involved.

The products included in this expanded recall are any Chicken Formula or Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with a "Best If Used By" date on or before 2/5/11, including:

If your package has been opened, please dispose of the raw food in a safe manner by securing it in a covered trash receptacle. Then, bring your receipt (or the empty package in a sealed bag) to your local retailer for a complete refund or replacement.

As you may know, Nature’s Variety now uses High Pressure Pasteurization on our Raw Frozen Diets as a unique process to kill pathogenic bacteria through high-pressure, water-based technology. Having incorporated this state-of-the-art technology on our Freeze Dried Raw products in late 2009, we were able to confidently implement the process universally on all Raw Frozen Diets after the February 11, 2010 recall in order to further enhance food safety. Nature’s Variety also utilizes a test and hold protocol to ensure that all High Pressure Pasteurized Raw Frozen Diets test negative for harmful bacteria before being released for sale.

We believe replacing all raw frozen chicken products on the market with new raw frozen chicken products that use High Pressure Pasteurization is an important and responsible step in order to reinforce your confidence and trust. Denver's Dog Police Are Trolling for Fines

Beware!!!! One of our customers received an $80 ticket from Denver's dog "police" today in Cesar Chavez park, across the street from our store. Because she didn't have her dog's city registration tag with her there is another $80 tacked onto her fine. The city is clearly out of money and scraping by by sending their non-furloughed employees out to stalk unsuspecting dog owners frolicking with their dogs at empty parks. Unless you've got money to burn (and contribute to Denver's coffers) you might want to stick with the designated dog parks. There is a great dog park at 46th and Sheridan - near our store. Not only is this completely fenced in and safe for your dog but you will have a great time meeting other like-minded, dog people! If you're tempting fate, consider purchasing one of Ruffwear's Quickdraw leashes. These velcro around your dog's collar and can be quickly released if the dog police jumps out from behind a bush. At less than $20, it will save you a considerable amount of money if you don't end up with a ticket!

Kittens found a new home!

Despite our amazing amount of snow, Mouthfuls was open today. Even better.... the kittens found a new home! These darling little babies went home with one of our favorite customers, who has actually become a very good friend of ours. She's fully equipped to handle them and we can't wait to hear how they do as they grow up. Now that was worth spending an hour digging out the driveway, driving through ice and shoveling out the store! Note to everyone... sometimes the most amazing experiences in our lives present themselves in the smallest little packages, when we least expect them. These little babies are so lucky to have been found before the snowstorm and have a happy life ahead of them.

Darling Kittens Found Near Mouthfuls

This darling little boy and girl were found abandoned in an alley near Mouthfuls a few days ago. Thankfully, they were found by a couple of well-meaning women before this heavy snowstorm! We're guessing they are between 4-6 weeks old and they are already happily lapping up Wellness canned kitten food and using the litter box. We'd love to have them find a home together but it's most important that they go to a good home! The kittens will be in the store most days in the near future until they get adopted. If you're interested in taking a look at them, give us a call at the store first to make sure they're in the store. Once they're adopted, we'll post another entry on the blog to share the good news with everyone!

We are once again offering a non-anesthetic teeth cleaning clinic at our store this week! Absolutely no anesthesia is used to clean your pets' teeth so there is no recovery time afterwards! All plaque and tartar is removed by thoroughly cleaning the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth. A licensed holistic veterinarian joins Cindy from Natural Pet for this kind and gentle technique. They use a method of hand scaling and hand polishing when performing the teeth cleaning.

Your pet sits in their lap and they reassure and comfort them with continual praise. Due to their expertise in handling pets, only a small percentage of dogs or cats cannot be cleaned. There is no charge if they are not able to clean your pet's teeth.

Please Read This Article Before You Buy a Puppy

We've all seen the cute, furry little bundles of joy in the windows of fancy pet stores in the mall. They're darling! We feel sorry for them and almost feel as if we're rescuing that puppy by purchasing him/her and getting them out of the store. But please hold onto your credit card and keep reading...

Yesterday I adopted two toy poodles that were "retired" breeders from a puppy mill in the middle of Iowa. This particular mill generally disposed of their out-of-date "breeding stock" by taking the older dogs out behind the chicken coop (where they were confined to for their entire life) and shooting them. A kind-hearted couple, Chris and Angela decided years ago to bite their tongue and struck up an agreement with the woman who ran the mill. Instead of killing the dogs, she called the couple on a regular basis and relinquished the dogs to them for future adoption. It's worth noting that Chris and Angela fund all the vet bills (spay/neuter, vaccinations, tumor removal, oral surgery, etc.) and feed/shelter them entirely on their own dime.

Last winter the monster who ran this puppy mill died suddenly and her son agreed to relinquish all but two dogs (presumably so he could start up again later) to Chris and Angela. Chihuahua lovers at heart, the couple found themselves up to their elbows in chihuahuas and poodles. Two of the poodles they rescued that day were Thelma and Stanley.

Thelma is an 11 year-old black toy poodle weighing in at around 4 pounds. Thelma sports a wild, gray (wig-like) head of hair. The breeder's son actually thought she was a male because she had a large (benign) mammary tumor, which has since been removed. What teeth she had from years of calcium depletion due to over breeding were rotten to the core and she has only two teeth left in her head. She's a spry "young" lady and was the first of the group to approach me.

Stanley is an 8-year-old black toy poodle who weighs only 5 pounds. He was one of the few males used for frequent breeding. Stanley is also toothless because he had never been groomed. You see, his hair grew into his mouth and between his teeth, rotting every one them at the gum line. As the Chris and Angela's vet tried to remove this hair from his mouth, his teeth fell out and I'm told the stench was indescribable. His penis was so wrapped so tightly with matted hair that it was a wonder he could breed at all. Stanley is a very sweet little boy and has become my shadow in the last 12 hours.

Last night the two had their first taste of raw food, which they happily gummed. They curled up and slept all night long with me in my soft, warm bed. Today we all went on a road trip to purchase a pair of harnesses and their first leashes. It took several stops to find a pet supply store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa that didn't sell puppies. I refused to support any store that sold puppies by purchasing anything from them. They are now happily snuggling in my lap, worn out from the day's activities as I write this post and I'm already head-over-heels in love with them.

Two more poodles from this group are still available - Polly (a sweet black toy poodle) and Gertrude (a more outgoing black toy poodle/dachshund? mix). These gals are still slowly coming out of their shells and will require a quieter environment to rehabilitate in. Chris and Angela think that it would be helpful for another dog to be present in their forever home to aid in that recovery. They also have several chihuahuas available for adoption.

I found Chris and Angela through the rescue network, Baxter's Buddies, out of Iowa City, IA. Baxter's Buddies is run by an amazing young woman named Heather who deserves Sainthood. She spends countless hours transporting dogs, arranging for foster homes and scrutinizing adoption inquiries, yet has a full-time job as a vet-tech. She's passionate about rescuing from puppy mills - who produce stock for unsuspecting pet store customers. If you buy a puppy from a pet store, you are buying a puppy that was created in a puppy mill for profit. End of story.

If you're interested in donating to Baxter's Buddies or Chris and Angela's rescue group, you can do so through our store. I find myself in Iowa every 6-8 weeks and I am more than happy to transport food, supplies and monetary donations to them. I am also able to bring dogs back for Denver pet parents if you are interested in adopting from this rescue group. You'll be so amazed to see how much love one of these incredibly grateful dogs can give to your family.

Mouthfuls Tours the Raw Facility of Nature's Variety

My business partner Tonya and I had the good fortune of being invited to tour the raw facility of Nature's Variety this week in Lincoln, NE. I feed raw to most of my dogs and we were anxious to see where the food was being manufactured as well as meet those who are responsible for making my pets' and our customers' pets' food.

Mouthfuls was part of a very small group of retailers chosen from throughout the country and we were warmly greeted at their first-ever organized tour by the whole team at Nature's Variety including the CEO - Reed Howlett, CFO -Aaron Grimm and Chairman - Bob Milligan.

Dr. Doug Kneuven, D.V.M., a passionate raw-food advocate and author of two holistic pet books, spoke with us at length about pet nutrition. We especially appreciated his tips on transitioning cats to raw food! (Be sure to ask us for help on this as we've had great success with lots of kitties.) Dr. Doug (as he is known by everyone at Nature's Variety) enlightened us on his clinical nutrition training at his vet school - a one hour course. No wonder vets aren't usually as helpful as we'd like them to be when it comes to dog and cat nutrition!

The tour of their raw facility and distribution facility was the highlight of our trip. We pictured a large factory prior to our arrival and instead were pleasantly surprised to discover an extremely clean, odor-free, compact facility - complete with dogs greeting us in the office with their tails wagging. The facility houses a lab used for testing surfaces and ingredients for bacterial contaminants as well as individual customer complaints on particular batches. The production room itself was freezing (as you'd imagine and hope!) and clean enough to eat off the chilly floor. We were particularly impressed with the care and individual attention they took to keep the ingredients as well as the final product at the perfect temperature. As you're separating those frozen patties on your kitchen counter next time, keep in mind that those papers are placed individually by real people and not machines!

We were particularly impressed with the openness and honesty of all the Nature's Variety team, especially Mary Helen Carty - their Western Regional Sales Manager. There was not a question we asked that she couldn't/wouldn't answer and that is impressive and incredibly rare. Their customer service "staff" consists of one delightful woman who actually answers the phone and passionately researches questions and concerns with her dog at her feet.

Essentially, we left Omaha feeling secure in our choice to highly recommend Nature's Variety Raw to our customers and to feed it to our own pets. Raw really is the healthiest way to feed most dogs and cats and their easy-to-use, complete diets are the most convenient way we've found to feed our four-legged babies. If you are curious about feeding raw but have questions, definitely stop into our store to pick our brains and ask for a sample. We love to help our customers transition to healthier diets and have years of experience feeding raw to our own animals. We're even hoping to help Aaron Grimm and his family learn how to feed this to his darling dog someday - right Aaron?

Mouthfuls Goes to Hollywood with The American Dog Magazine!

Talk about a dream weekend! Saturday I was invited to attend Much Love's 3rd Annual Bow Wow Wow Howlywood Celebrity Fundraiser in Hollywood with the publisher of The American Dog Magazine (which I write for).

Much Love is a no-kill organization run entirely by volunteers that rescues companion animals from death row at Los Angeles shelters. The animals are spayed/neutered and vaccinated before being placed with loving, grateful owners, often through their foster network. They do not yet have a shelter of their own but it's a goal they've put in place for 2010.

As you can see from the photos, this organization has a huge celebrity following and media support. The American Dog Magazine was a sponsor of the event this year, and it's worth mentioning that it is the only magazine that donated/sponsored the event, despite the amazing media coverage at the Gala. The American Dog Magazine is committed to animal rescue and the publisher, Jamie Downey puts her money where her mouth is!

A special thanks to Carole Raphaelle Davis (who was honored at the event for her work against puppy mills) and Kevin Rooney for hosting us over the weekend. It was so nice to spend time with such passionate animal lovers who work tirelessly for those with no voice.

Have You Found a Treat That Your Cat Will Eat?

Every day we hear from cat owners who have searched far and wide for a treat that their cat would eat consistently. Cats are so darn finicky (mine included!) and typically don't like healthy treats. Sure, you can get them to eat something with high-fructose corn syrup in it but do you really want to destroy their teeth? Mouthfuls has created two wonderfully healthy cat treats that your kitty (and vet) will love!

Fish out of Water is dried Mackerel (get it- fish OUT of water?), packaged in a reusable hinged tin. Cats go wild for the flaky bits of human-grade goodness. The larger flakes can be individually parceled out to kitty but watch your fingers - your cat will go nuts! The smaller bits are a healthy and tasty addition to your cat's meal.

The Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program (PTKCP) is a program, which provides the outside community with pre-trained dogs. Dogs graduating from this program fill many roles: everything from a wonderfully trained basic family pet, a nursing home dog to very sophisticated assistance dogs which perform a variety of tasks for their masters. These dogs are perfect pets for the youngest child to an elderly parent.

One of the most unique aspects of the program is that it saves dogs, both pure bred and mixed breed, from humane shelters and other animal rescues all over Colorado and surrounding states. We have been inspected by the Colorado State Veterinarian's office and licensed as an animal rescue. Our program has received dogs from Lamar, Salida, Canon City, Colorado Springs, Cortez, Denver, Pueblo, New Mexico and many more. Each dog is hand selected, and temperament tested. Our program has also accepted many privately donated dogs. This program has been the last chance for many of the dogs which have come into our program.

All dogs which are rescued by the PTKCP receive appropriate veterinary care. This includes spay or neuter, multiple vaccine, rabies vaccine, heart worm test, heart worm preventative and worming. Some dogs come to our program suffering from neglect, lack of proper nourishment, abuse and require what would be extraordinary veterinary care. No dog owned by the PTKCP, will leave the program intact (meaning not spayed or neutered) regardless of breed, registered or unregistered.

The training each dog receives covers many aspects. First, the program is an intensive socialization program. The dog learns to be around and greet many people. They live with many other dogs. Basic manners training includes sit to greet a person, sit to go through a door, crate training and house training. Basic obedience includes: sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay, come when called, basic heeling on lead and we deal with any problem behaviors the dog has. Many dogs will go on to learn hand signals, or other tricks. We also feature confidence building with agility equipment training at some facilities.

The PTKCP is not tax supported. We are supported by the adoption fees we charge for each dog. The standard adoption fee we charge for each dog is $450. This includes fees we must pay to procure the dog initially, all standard veterinary care, daily dog maintenance and the daily amount we pay each inmate handler for transforming each animal into a desirable pet. Dogs with specialized training such as Assistance Dogs or Hunting Dogs, have individualized fees.

Another unique aspect of the PTKCP is that we offer boarding-in training to private dog owners. Boarding-in training lasts a minimum of one month. The monthly boarding-in fee is $450 for 4 weeks. If you decide you want the dog to stay longer, the cost would then be $50 per week after the first four weeks. We accept most breeds on a first come, first served basis. We have along waiting list. Appointments need to be made months in advance.

Plaque Off

How are your pet's teeth? Do you brush every day and have them professionally cleaned every year? My guess is NO. But don't feel bad, I don't either - yet my dogs' and cat's teeth are clean, white and beautiful with no plaque on them. Yes, the owners of Mouthfuls have pets with beautiful teeth. How, you ask?

Start with the basics: Feed a great food. If your pets' food includes corn, wheat, soy, gluten meals, "animal fat" or "meat meal", it's time to upgrade. These low-quality foods contribute to a massive amount of plaque on your pet's teeth.

Allow your pets to chew! I offer my dogs raw bison bones several times a week. These raw bones are from Bison that are pasture-raised and hormone and antibiotic free. Raw bones don't split and literally pull the tartar off your dog's teeth. Bully sticks and tendons are stringy and act like dental floss to remove plaque.

Crunchy dog treats don't count: There is a company out there that produces crunchy dog treats, claiming that it helps clean the teeth. Wait a minute! We don't give our children graham crackers before bed instead of brushing their teeth. The same concept applies for dogs.

Use Plaque Off regularly! This form of powdered sea weed was discovered in Sweden and is THE MOST EFFECTIVE thing I have ever found for pet dental care. Just a tiny spoonful of this on the food daily keeps the bad bacteria from adhering to the teeth as plaque. This is an important distinction from other products. It doesn't KILL the bacteria, it just keeps it from adhering. Therefore, it isn't killing bacteria in the digestive track the way other preventative products do.

The company suggests that it may take 3-4 weeks of continuous use to notice a difference. That may be true but we've found that it is more like 3-4 months before the existing plaque softens enough to slough off with frequent chewing. Don't give up too early on this product. You and your vet will be amazed at the results!

Gather up your four-legged children and head over to Mouthfuls on December 6th. We will be be offering photos with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claws from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. behind the store. The photos are free, but a suggested donation of $15-$20 (or more!) will gladly be collected and sent to the Misha May Foundation or the Max Fund. (We'll also be participating in a food drive for both organizations throughout December.) You're welcome to include your two-legged children and join in the picture yourself if you're so inclined. If you'd like to be guaranteed a spot, call us at the store at (720)855-7505 to reserve one. If you're more of a risk-taker, walk in that day and wander the store while we try to fit you in!

Muddy Paws, our favorite dog wash up the street (4902 W. 38th Ave.) is offering 1/2 price dog washes and 1/2 price dog grooming the week before. All you need to do is mention the fact that your dog needs some fixing up before meeting Santa! Oh, and she's donating a portion of that fee to the Misha May Foundation and the Max Fund. Photos will be available on the internet within the next few days after the photos are taken. You can then download them and incorporate them in your holiday emails, send them to a photo processing store or print them yourself. We're all about providing you with options!

Has your dog or cat tried our "Just Chicken!" yet? It's amazing stuff! Just Chicken is exactly as it sounds - just white chicken breast meat - that has been gently freeze dried into a light and airy consistency. Pets that "don't like treats" go nuts over this one. It's our go-to treat for picky dogs that visit us in our retail store. But it has so many other uses as well!

If you've got a new puppy, you'll definitely want a few jars of this. Use this treat ONLY as a reward for going potty outdoors and your pup will catch on incredibly quickly. When I've had puppies in my house, I keep a jar in my bathrobe pocket. I then just need to stumble outdoors in the middle of the night and shake the jar for instant success. Once your dog has mastered potty training, you can transfer this to anything else you're working on... sit, stay, down....

If your cat is picky and routinely turns her nose up at her food, consider trying a jar of this. My cat is generally a good eater but she occasionally walks away from her food. On those nights, I crumble a piece of our Just Chicken on her food and she comes running back to try what she just turned down. This trick works great for picky dogs as well!

Is your dog getting a little too chubby? You know you need to cut back on treats but you just can't bear to do it. Our Just Chicken is incredibly low in fat and high in protein. It's the perfect "diet" treat for any size dog. Because it's such a high-value treat, your dog will feel special regardless of how much he gets. How are your pets' teeth? Contrary to a well-publicized and effective marketing campaign that a well-known company created, chewing crunchy biscuits DO NOT clean your pets teeth. How many of you eat a graham cracker before bed instead of brushing your teeth? Dogs that eat a lot of carbs, especially processed carbohydrates like gluten meals tend to have terrible teeth and breath. They will be much better off eating a high-protein, carbohydrate-free treat instead. Just Chicken fits that bill perfectly. The incredible taste will get those salivary glands working, helping to improve your pet's breath!

First Friday ArtWalk Features Dog and Cat Artists

We are so excited to be featuring work from some of Denver's leading female artists during this month's First Friday ArtWalk at Mouthfuls! You'll find original art from Julia McClurg (lulubellaart.com), Karen Windness (mudpuppystudios.com), Jen Sebastian (scoutdogstudios.com) and photography by Heather Green (studiobellaonline.com).

Julia McClurg is well-known in the Denver area for her Lulu Bella series of art. She can be hired to create custom contemporary paintings of your pet or you can peruse her many prints already available. Julia has a series of cards, her very own wine label and has illustrated a children's book named Zooch the Pooch.

Karen Windness' art is also recognizable in the metro area. She can be hired to create custom modern paintings of your pet or you can choose from a wide range of originals available. Her designs can be found on onesies for babies and wall tiles. She has written and illustrated one book and is currently working on her second.

Jen Sebastian's art can be found just around the corner from Mouthfuls. Her studio features commissioned work, stationary, pins and prints available in various price ranges. She is known for creating images of dogs and cats without eyes. Humorous and entertaining art.

Heather Green is a photographer with The Colorado Dog Magazine. She has an amazing gift of capturing the dogs' personality on film. Heather can be hired to photograph your own dog in both color and black and white with a contemporary edge. You'll drool over her photos in the store.

The Cat House is Open!

When we first opened the store, the vast majority of our offerings were for dogs. We had the obligatory cat "shelf", which had some great foods and a few treats on it. We started to notice early on, however, that we had a lot of cat owners in the neighborhood. We continued to add to our cat section and the number of cat owners that shopped with us increased tremendously. By popular request, we have now officially opened our "cat house" in the store. We had devoted an entire room to our feline-loving customers. We are adding several new food lines for kitties and lots more treats and toys! My kitten is a willing and anxious tester for all the treats we consider. Come visit us soon and let us know if we're missing your favorite cat products.

Mouthfuls' Pet-friendly Community Gathering Space Available

After much anticipation, we have finally finished our back patio. This patio originally was conceived to be an area to offer birthday parties, puppy & kitten showers and seminars on nutrition and training. After Denver began issuing warnings to local coffee shops and bistros for allowing dogs on their patio, the patio took on a whole new meaning. It seems Denver's health department codes are violated when one sips coffee with their canine on the patio of the restaurant. We are appalled.

Because we don't cook food at Mouthfuls, however, that isn't an issue for us. Instead, we've gathered take-out menus from most of the restaurants on Tennyson. You're welcome to call in an order while you shop, pick it up and return to dine with your dog in back. The area is completely fenced, so your dogs can romp to their hearts' content while you sit back and relax. Or, bring in the Sunday paper and a cup of coffee and enjoy some time to yourself while your dog makes new friends.

We also gladly offer the space for parties, meet-ups and other gatherings at no charge. Just sign up in the store for the space and we'll hold it for you. Your guests will even receive goody bags from Mouthfuls!

This space will appear in a popular magazine next month, so hurry in to reserve the space before the whole world finds out about it!

Freddy the Cat is Free!

First of all, let me thank all of you for all your creative suggestions, well wishes and support. We are happy to report that as of yesterday (August 15th), Freddy was officially free.

For the uninitiated (and those living under a rock), Freddy the cat took up residence in my business partner's rental home. Unfortunately, however, Freddy's owner packed up his toothbrush and left everything else behind, including his cat. Freddy was distraught and hid deep within a hole behind the bathtub, refusing to come out when humans were present. For 13 days, Freddy foiled every treat, trap and idea that we tried. He is truly the smartest animal I've ever crossed paths with. (That, and he was scared to death!) We finally called in an animal communicator for assistance and that evening, Freddy was caught. You can read all about the detailed trap that his new owner set on various news stations including channel 9 and 31.

The happy ending to this story is not just that Freddy is out of the wall, but that the 4 1/2 year-old feline is safely embedded in his new home across the street. His new owner had lost her cat in the Spring and was ready for another bundle of joy. She's a patient, wonderful cat lover and she and her husband wanted Freddy very much. Even more touching was the fact that the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary together on the day they brought Freddy home. Freddy couldn't be in a better place.

As promised, Mouthfuls will provide Freddy with food, treats and toys for a full year. We brought him a new leopard print bed and fresh litter box as a welcome home gift.

We are so thankful that this story had a happy ending and that we learned so much from Freddy in the process!

Adding to the family!

I am pleased to announce the arrival of my new baby. This weekend I'll be bringing home Tatiana, our 12-week-old Siberian kitten. This Russian forest breed doesn't trigger cat allergies in my family and we are all so excited! I was completely impressed when I found out that the breeder was feeding her Innova EVO canned food. That's what I'll keep her on for awhile, but ultimately I'd like her to eat raw, just like our family dogs.

When we opened our store, we focused primarily on dogs and had a small shelf with cat products tucked in the corner. We soon learned that there were a TON of cat owners in the neighborhood so we began to slowly add to the cat section. After four store "rearrangements" in two years, we've now increased the cat area tremendously. We carry a very wide variety of cat foods and have a great selection of toys and treats. Something tells me that by adding a cat to my household, we'll soon be devoting even more room to them.

First Friday Art Walk

If you've never joined us for a First Friday Art Walk, then by all means - consider it! The first Friday of every month, merchants on Tennyson Street between 38th and 44th stay open late into the evening. Most serve cocktails and appetizers, and encourage everyone to just come by and browse without rushing! Over 20 merchants on the strip consider themselves "pet friendly" so it's a great way to share an evening with your dog! The event is officially scheduled between 6-9 but we've been known to stay open until 11:00, as long as we've got people wandering around.

At Mouthfuls this Friday, we'll have a representative from Nature's Variety at the store earlier in the day (12-4). For those of you who missed the raw food seminar on Sunday, it's another opportunity to learn about that aspect of pet food. In addition to their easy-to-feed raw, Nature's Variety has a wonderful kibble that's rolled in a freeze-dried raw and a canned food that is 95% meat! It's a fabulous food that we highly recommend! This food is designed for rotation, making it a great choice for busy people that occasionally travel and need options.

Later that evening, Susan from Merrick will stop by to pass out free samples and education on Merrick Pet Food. Merrick is the only pet food that we're aware of that owns their own cannery and dry food manufacturing facility. They are based in Texas and use only U.S. ingredients. Talk about reassuring! Merrick also has a wonderful assortment of treats that are huge hits with our customers. Go home with free samples and another option for healthy food.

Raw Pet Food Seminar

By popular request, we are offering a FREE Raw Pet Food Seminar on Saturday, April 28th at 2:00. The seminar will be held on the back patio at our store and participants will receive a FREE one pound bag of raw food to try at home.

We'll be discussing the pros and cons of this diet (Extreme health, very little to pick up in the yard, no more litter box smell, great teeth...) We'll also be talking about the use of raw bones to clean your pets' teeth and keep their gums healthy.

There is no cost for this seminar but it is limited to 20 participants. There is a sign-up sheet in the store or you can call (720)855-7505 to register. Once the class is full, we'll be collecting email addresses so we can alert others of the next seminar. Due to the pet food recall, we're expecting this seminar to fill up fast!

April 1, 2007: Channel 4 also showed up at the dog park for a story featuring the pet food recall. Again, this story didn't show up on their website. The coverage aired at 10:00 p.m.

April 1, 2007: A team from HD Net also joined us at the dog park to profile April Stool's Day. That story will air on "Deadline" on Friday. It should be a hoot!

Switching Pet Foods

We have spent the last two years in the store helping our customers choose great food for their dogs and cats. It hasn’t always been easy though, especially when people can run over to Wal-Mart and pick up a 50-pound bag of their signature food for next to nothing. What was hard to explain was the fact that “next to nothing” also referred to the quality of the ingredients in the actual food too! A poor diet can and will contribute to poor health which can cost so much more in the long-run.

Then, Menu Foods Income Fund announced the first of many recalls surrounding a nutritionally suspect ingredient – Wheat Gluten. Suddenly, everyone began scrutinizing the ingredient labels on their beloved four-legged children’s food. Low and behold, the advertisers of “junk” pet food have been doing a wonderful job. They’ve successfully convinced Americans that they are feeding the best tasting, highest quality food out there.

We all knew that the “low-end” foods (you know what they are so we don’t need to name names!) were truly low-end. That’s a given, although lots of people on a strict budget do use these foods on a regular basis. But who knew that the flashy bags of other foods including Iams and Science Diet had so many cheap fillers in them? Who knew that they were allowing their manufacturer to use some of the same ingredients in Iams as they were using in Wal-Mart’s Ol’ Roy dog food?

The day that the recall hit, we went through the list with a fine-toothed comb to make sure that we didn’t have anything in the store that was recalled. We breathed a sigh of relief once we discovered that we didn’t have anything on the list. Every single time another recall hit, we did the same thing. But this weekend, we finally put everything together.

The reason that we don’t have anything in the store on the recall list is two-fold.

• We don’t carry foods that have cheap fillers like corn, wheat & soy. We realize those are key allergens in pets and provide very little nutritional benefit in food.

• Whenever possible, we buy locally and do business with small businesses. We like the ability to pick up the phone and get a key person to answer questions right away. None of our pet foods are traded on the stock exchange. While these pet food manufacturers certainly are “for-profit” businesses, they don’t substitute quality in order to save a fraction of a penny. They have frequently been on the forefront of pet nutrition and all but one of our foods are always listed on the Whole Dog Journal’s “approved” pet food lists. (Whole Dog Journal is basically the “Consumer Report” for pet products.)

We feel confident that if there were ever a problem with any of the foods in our store, we would be the first to know. We would also call each and every one of our customers (participating in the Barker’s Dozen program) to let them know of a potential problem. Think about it. The grocery stores and big-box pet stores all have shopper cards that track a customer’s purchase. Most of us are tired of carrying cards around in our wallet so we just tell them our phone number at the beginning of the purchase. They all have our phone numbers. Did any of their customers get any phone calls alerting them that they purchased a product that is now being recalled? I highly doubt it.

In any event, we are here to help answer questions about your pet’s food. If you have any doubts, bring in a label from the food that you’re currently feeding and we’ll help you scrutinize it. All of the foods in our store are guaranteed by the manufacturer! If your dog has trouble with a food or your cat just refuses to eat it, feel free to bring it back and we’ll exchange it for another product. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error but we’ll work with you to get the perfect food for your pet.

No matter what sales people tell you, no one food is going to work for every pet!
