Free Healthy Pet Seminars at Mouthfuls!

Mouthfuls is hosting a series of healthy pet seminars in our store during the month of January. We're all thinking healthy this time of year and we want to include our pets in that thinking too. We've gathered some of our favorite experts to share their knowledge with our customers free of charge! Our seminars are limited to 20 people per night so let us know early if you'd like to join us.

Wednesday, January 14th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Dr. Judy Jasek (a holistic vet in nearby Englewood - ) will be discussing the importance of a healthy digestive system for dogs and cats. Do you know the difference between prebiotics, probiotics, digestive enzymes and soil-based organisms? We'll give you a hint - they are the key elements necessary for a healthy pet!

Wednesday, January 21st from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., a representative from Nature's Variety () will be hosting a raw food seminar for dogs and cats. This is the healthiest way to feed our animals, yet most people are nervous or intimidated about trying it. Join us for this informative discussion and go home that evening with a free sample to try on your pets.

Wednesday, January 28th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., our favorite dog trainer, Scott Schwab will join us this evening to help us all create a balanced home with our dogs. Scott will be giving us all kind of tips to help make your dog respect you without feeling intimidated. The owners have used this trainer for all of their dogs and this is a great opportunity to meet him. Please leave your dogs at home while you're learning how to be boss!

Watch our blog for additional seminars coming soon!

Plaque Off

How are your pet's teeth? Do you brush every day and have them professionally cleaned every year? My guess is NO. But don't feel bad, I don't either - yet my dogs' and cat's teeth are clean, white and beautiful with no plaque on them. Yes, the owners of Mouthfuls have pets with beautiful teeth. How, you ask?

Start with the basics: Feed a great food. If your pets' food includes corn, wheat, soy, gluten meals, "animal fat" or "meat meal", it's time to upgrade. These low-quality foods contribute to a massive amount of plaque on your pet's teeth.

Allow your pets to chew! I offer my dogs raw bison bones several times a week. These raw bones are from Bison that are pasture-raised and hormone and antibiotic free. Raw bones don't split and literally pull the tartar off your dog's teeth. Bully sticks and tendons are stringy and act like dental floss to remove plaque.

Crunchy dog treats don't count: There is a company out there that produces crunchy dog treats, claiming that it helps clean the teeth. Wait a minute! We don't give our children graham crackers before bed instead of brushing their teeth. The same concept applies for dogs.

Use Plaque Off regularly! This form of powdered sea weed was discovered in Sweden and is THE MOST EFFECTIVE thing I have ever found for pet dental care. Just a tiny spoonful of this on the food daily keeps the bad bacteria from adhering to the teeth as plaque. This is an important distinction from other products. It doesn't KILL the bacteria, it just keeps it from adhering. Therefore, it isn't killing bacteria in the digestive track the way other preventative products do.

The company suggests that it may take 3-4 weeks of continuous use to notice a difference. That may be true but we've found that it is more like 3-4 months before the existing plaque softens enough to slough off with frequent chewing. Don't give up too early on this product. You and your vet will be amazed at the results!

Jingle and Mingle at Mouthfuls on December 10th!

Are you and your family participating in the growing trend of buying locally? It's easier than ever this holiday season. Merchants on Tennyson Street have created not one but two Jingle and Mingle shopping extravaganzas this year. The first will occur on Wednesday, December 10th and we will all be open until 9:00 that night. This is a great opportunity to have dinner at one of the many restaurants that surround us before leisurely strolling and shopping the street. You'll be serenaded by Carolers on the street, find discount booklets (that include a coupon for our store!) at many of the merchant's locations and score myriads of unique, affordable gifts for your families and friends! Santa will be available for pictures at Simply Divine.

All of the merchants are accepting (new) toy donations for the Tennyson Center for Children. This incredible organization serves children of all ages and is grateful for any new toys except toy weapons.

We at Mouthfuls are also spearheading a pet food drive benefitting the Max Fund and the Misha May Foundation. New or gently used blankets, towels, bowls, leashes, toys, food and treats will be graciously accepted and distributed to these needy organizations.

Oh, and if this isn't enough, we'll be offering cookies and hot cider to warm your bones while you enjoy a festive evening. Hope to see you there!

The photos are free, but a suggested donation of $15-$20 (or more!) will gladly be collected and sent to the Misha May Foundation or the Max Fund. (We'll also be participating in a food drive for both organizations throughout December.) You're welcome to include your two-legged children and join in the picture yourself if you're so inclined. Muddy Paws, our favorite dog wash up the street (4902 W. 38th Ave.) is offering 1/2 price dog washes and 1/2 price dog grooming the week before. All you need to do is mention the fact that your dog needs some fixing up before meeting Santa! Oh, and she's donating a portion of that fee to the Misha May Foundation and the Max Fund. Call to schedule grooming (303)433-4642 or just walk in for a wash.

Photos will be available on the internet within the next few days after the photos are taken. You can then download them and incorporate them in your holiday emails, send them to a photo processing store or print them yourself. We're all about providing you with options!

Happy Holidays and we hope to see you there!

The best product in our store and we make it!

Has your dog or cat tried our "Just Chicken!" yet? It's amazing stuff! Just Chicken is exactly as it sounds - just white chicken breast meat - that has been gently freeze dried into a light and airy consistency. Pets that "don't like treats" go nuts over this one. It's our go-to treat for picky dogs that visit us in our retail store. But it has so many other uses as well!

If you've got a new puppy, you'll definitely want a few jars of this. Use this treat ONLY as a reward for going potty outdoors and your pup will catch on incredibly quickly. When I've had puppies in my house, I keep a jar in my bathrobe pocket. I then just need to stumble outdoors in the middle of the night and shake the jar for instant success. Once your dog has mastered potty training, you can transfer this to anything else you're working on... sit, stay, down....

If your cat is picky and routinely turns her nose up at her food, consider trying a jar of this. My cat is generally a good eater but she occasionally walks away from her food. On those nights, I crumble a piece of our Just Chicken on her food and she comes running back to try what she just turned down. This trick works great for picky dogs as well!

Is your dog getting a little too chubby? You know you need to cut back on treats but you just can't bear to do it. Our Just Chicken is incredibly low in fat and high in protein. It's the perfect "diet" treat for any size dog. Because it's such a high-value treat, your dog will feel special regardless of how much he gets. It's a great cure for that age-old guilt trip that our dogs are so famous for giving us.

Does your cat go outdoors and refuse to come in at times? Try offering our Just Chicken to kitty every night when you let the cat in. Cats can hear the jar shaking hundreds of feet away and come running - literally! I've occasionally "lost" my cat, wondering what room she's shut in or where she's hiding. All I have to do is pull the jar out of the cupboard and she's instantly at my feet.

How are your pets' teeth? Contrary to a well-publicized and effective marketing campaign that a well-known company created, chewing crunchy biscuits DO NOT clean your pets teeth. How many of you eat a graham cracker before bed instead of brushing your teeth? Dogs that eat a lot of carbs, especially processed carbohydrates like gluten meals tend to have terrible teeth and breath. They will be much better off eating a high-protein, carbohydrate-free treat instead. Just Chicken fits that bill perfectly. The incredible taste will get those salivary glands working, helping to improve your pet's breath!

Our Just Chicken can be found in our Denver boutique, myriads of other small pet boutiques throughout the country and on our website. If you're lucky enough to live in the Denver area, pop in our store for a free sample. If you're not in the Denver area, ask your favorite pet retailer to get it for you! Your pet will thank you for it.

Budget-friendly nutrition

You can't turn on the television lately without hearing just how bad our economy is. News like that has us all nervous about our budgets and we've got you covered at our store. You might be surprised to learn that while we carry lots of "high-end" food with impressive ingredients, we carry just as many competitively priced food with equally impressive ingredients. Couple that with our Barker's Dozen frequent buyer program that gets you the 13th bag, case of cans or frozen food free and you've got a budget-friendly combination. Just because a food is expensive or cheap doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good or bad food!

Studies show that feeding a healthy, nutritionally dense food is actually cheaper than feeding a junky pet food that is loaded with by-products and corn and wheat glutens. Yes, the bag costs more initially, but you don't feed as much so in the long-run, it's actually cheaper. Even better - your pet will be healthier and have a better quality of life.

Our staff is highly trained and we are very adept at helping you find a pet food that will work well for your pets and your budget. Don't be shy about what you're looking for. Pick our brains and tell us your limitations. Our goals are the same - healthy, happy pets. We're here to help!
